What synastry actually measures
Synastry overlays two birth charts. Instead of just "sun sign vs sun sign," it looks at how each person's planets land in the other person's chart. The big measures:
- Venus and Mars overlays: what you each want romantically vs sexually, and whether those line up
- Moon overlay: emotional needs and whether you instinctively soothe or trigger each other
- 7th house overlay: what kind of partner each person is drawn to — and whether the other person fits
- Major aspects: trines and sextiles (easy), squares and oppositions (productive friction)
Why sun-sign compatibility is misleading
Your sun sign is the most public, surface-level version of you. Two people who'd read as "clash" on sun signs often have moons, Venuses, or rising signs that quietly do most of the relationship work. The sun is real but it's not the whole person.
Real synastry doesn't ask "are you compatible." It asks "what is this specific dynamic going to feel like, and where will it work, and where will it fight."
What "compatible" even means
A relationship with too much easy synastry (everything trine, everything aligned) can feel safe and also stuck. A relationship with too much friction (lots of squares and oppositions) can feel alive and also exhausting. Most lasting relationships have some of both.

What is synastry?
Synastry is the astrological technique of comparing two birth charts to see how they interact. Where your planets sit in their chart (and vice versa) shows you what dynamics are likely between the two of you.
Are Leo and Aquarius compatible?
Sun sign pairs alone are a bad signal. Two Leo–Aquarius couples will read completely differently because their moons, Venuses, Marses, and rising signs are all different. Sun sign compatibility is the bumper-sticker version of synastry.
What if our 'compatibility score' is low?
Compatibility scores are a marketing simplification. Synastry surfaces patterns — easy chemistry, hard friction, the specific things you'll fight about and the specific things that work — not a pass/fail. A 'low score' often means more growth potential, not 'don't date them.'
Can synastry tell me if we'll last?
It can show you what you have to work with. It can't tell you what you'll do with it. Two people with rough synastry but real commitment outlast two people with easy synastry but no effort. The chart is a description, not a verdict.
